Missouri Baptist Convention pastors and church members are urged to immediately call their House of Representatives member as lawmakers enter the home stretch of debate on what may be one of the most important religious liberty bills in the state’s history.
Senate Joint Resolution (SGR) 39, also known as the Missouri Religious Freedom Amendment, is expected to be heard before the House’s Emerging Issues Committee soon. If it passes it will advance to the Select Committee on General Law where passage will send it to the House floor for final debate and an historic vote. The measure has been approved by the Senate. If passed by the House, SJR 39’s fate would be determined by voters either in August or November. If approved by voters it would become part of the Bill of Rights to the Missouri Constitution.
“We are asking pastors, other leaders and church members to call their House member and ask them to pass SJR 39 without amendments,” said Pathway Editor and MBC Public Policy Advisor Don Hinkle. “Please stress without amendments because any amendment will lead to its failure. It is acceptable for anyone who prefers to email or write a letter instead. It is vitally important that lawmakers hear the hearts of Missouri Southern Baptists immediately on this critical issue.”
You may find out who your House member is by clicking the link below. It will take you to a page where you can type in your zip code, hit enter and it will provide your House member with contact information. The amendment can also be read at the website which also features a variety of resources on religious freedom.
If approved, SJR 39 will prevent the state from penalizing clergy, churches, institutions (schools, universities, children’s homes) as well as a handful of businesses in the wedding industry because they disagree with same-sex marriage.
